Notice from Clare Gaa:-

Dear Secretary,

As you are aware our new season is nearly in full swing. This year we will attempt to play more games than ever in Clare and as you are aware all are games now need an offical referee.I am very consious of referee burnt out with of our referees now being asked to officate in the region of 150 -200 games in the season, with this in mind and to ease the pressure on our referees i am asking for your help and the help of all clubs in Clare.

What i am suggesting is that each club in the county will nominate at least 1 suitable candidate to attend the up coming referee level 1 foundation courses which we will be running over the next few weeks. This is essential to make sure that all games in the county are properly run at the highest standards which is what we all our aiming for.Clare level 1 foundation course are scheduled for the following dates,

Tuesday 25th Feb at 730 in Clareabbey,

Tuesday 3rd March at 730 in Clareabbey,

Tuesday 10th March at 730 in Clareabbey,

Each individual will be required to attend on all 3 nights and at the end of the third night they will be qualified to start their careers as our future stars in refeering. This year Croke Park have extended an invitation to all candidates who complete the 3 nights to attend a meet and greet day in Croke park on the 4th of April where they will meet with some of the top referees in the country and they will be presented with their certificates and a set of referees gear by the president of the GAA.Refreshments will be supplied on the day.

This is a fantastic opportunity for young and not so young to get involved in refereieing.I can honestly say that to be involved as a referee can be very rewarding and can lead to oppurtunities to referee at the highest level.Your support with this would be greatly appreciated and continue the high level of refereeing within the county.

lease forward all candidates details to me before Tuesday 18th of Feb .

Our GAA Manifesto (English)

Our GAA Manifesto (Gaeilge)

From: Communications

Sent: Monday 8 April 2019 11:16

To: Communications

Subject: Our GAA Manifesto

A chara,

Today we launch our new GAA Manifesto, a celebration of our GAA – of our shared values and of all the people who make our GAA what it is.

The first manifestos were unveiled today at St Colmcille’s in Bettystown, Co Meath in both Irish and English, and a copy will be distributed to every club around the globe.

It is an affirmation of our GAA mission, vision and values, regardless of your role within the organisation, and is built around the statement: ‘GAA – Where We All Belong’ / CLG – Tá Áit Dúinn Uilig Ann’.

Based on feedback we sought from more than 8,000 people, this research revealed that the sense of belonging the GAA gives is of utmost importance to them.

We are asking you to help us give it visibility in your Clubs, by proudly displaying it in your clubhouses and dressing rooms, posting it on your websites and by engaging with it on both your club’s social media channels as well as your own. Attached you’ll find the files and guidelines to help you do this.

The GAA Manifesto and all that it stands for, will be brought to life in the coming months on our television screens, in print, on social media and crucially by you in our clubhouses right across the GAA network.

The campaign will feature members performing the duties and doing the things they do that provide the energy that fuels the GAA as a movement and a positive force in Irish life and beyond.

We hope the manifesto and the activity supporting it resonates with you as a GAA volunteer and we look forward to connecting with as many of our members as possible.

Thanking you as ever for your support.

Go raibh maith agaibh.

Ballyvaughan's club shop is open for business!

Being a small club, with very unusual colours it proved to be a difficult task convincing a sports gear provider to come on board.

Every item is a once off special design for us rather than sticking our crest on a intercounty template.

More items, gear bags, polo shirts etc will be added in the near future.

Special mention to Neil Walsh for his tireless efforts dealing with suppliers, taking orders and being a one man band regarded any gear requests.

Here written is a tribute to Mattie Bermingham (Mathúin Mac Fheorais): RIP January 2019

Principal of St. John's National School, Ballyvaughan; (1958-1966)

Our teacher arrived to Ballyvaughan primary school during the autumn of 1958; receiving accommodation through Mrs. Susan Carey who resided on the main street. During the following eight years he took an active interest, not alone in education; but in social, sporting and linguistic aspects of his adopted community. Mattie / Mathúin was a native of Ballykett, close to the town of Kilrush.

Black Morris Minor:

While his ability to impart knowledge of various topics to students was evident within the classroom, he also impacted dramatically on the limited social outlets in the late 1950's; through his organisation of the under 14 school hurling team which continued to provide necessary diversion during the months leading up to the summer holidays; with his transmission of hurling skills taking place at the former workhouse field, following his classroom duties. Transport to matches for the school hurling teams was provided through the Master's black Morris-Minor and Seán Colley's well-known Ford (IY 8388). Sometimes people wonder how enthusiasm for sports is transmitted from one generation to the next? As just two cars were available to transport the local school hurling team, the teacher's car would head towards Corkscrew hill; with at least eight teenagers on board and a set of hurls in the boot. The black Morris-Minor was then reversed at Paddy Connolly's bend, and it remained in that mode until it reached the national school; located at the top of Corkscrew hill. Postgraduate students in 2019 write theses about generation-gaps and the difficulty with transmission from previous generations to the current teenage-group who are usually immersed within the wonders of social-media. The demands of those Corkscrew journeys in the black Morris-Minor ensured there was no opportunity for a generation gap to develop, as all on board were immersed in the enthusiasm and expectation of their upcoming hurling-match.

Corn na Bóirne - Burren Cup:

The Múinteoir Scoile later progressed to donating a cup for the best North Clare school football-team. Michael Cusacks' of Carron were the regular winners of that competition, with the final game played at Seán Colley's (Collins) Lawn over at Newtown, with the winning team receiving Corn na Bóirne from the Master himself.

Mattie became part of a local group who invited the ferry boat, Galway Bay to transport interested passengers from County Clare to the Aran islands on Sunday summer-excursions from Ballyvaughan (new pier) to Kilronan on the large island from 1965.

General Education; Radio Goleen - 1960's:

Such innovation was not confined to the Master himself; his infectious enthusiasm was transmitted to one of his pupils, Gerry Wallace of Low Street, Ballyvaughan. From 4.00pm each afternoon, Gerry and his friends began transmitting Radio Goleen from their 'studio' located at Low Street, to the wider Galway bay area. Records (LPs) such as those received from Ben Dolan (Salthill, Galway), an older brother of Joe Dolan; then a Mullingar teenager, could be heard across the airwaves on both sides of Galway Bay, as a teenage audience discarded their school-books and exercises for the following day; to tune into their own

Radio Goleen/Ballyvaughan!

Further educational outlets were provided when Clare Vocational Education Committee (CVEC) under the late Kevin Jennings, opened a branch of Clare VEC at the Old School on the Galway road; as well as at OLochlainn's 'hotel'. The list of VEC teachers of 1965 included a Miss Brassil and Mr. MacMenamin (Donegal). Mattie was instrumental in setting up a vegetable co-operative across from the local church (Medical Centre today) which collected and distributed locally produced vegetables, from various parts of Counties Clare and Galway. One of the primary supporters of this innovation was the late Joe Kerin who was then recently returned from Cambridge, England, before taking up his employment at the vegetable co-operative; which was supported by a Dublin based group, known as Dóchas.

Gleninagh Gaeltacht:

While our teacher was greatly interested with improving the welfare of his adopted community, he had a particular 'grá' for those from the Gleninagh community, located on the road to Black Head. During the late 1950's the road to Black Head was tar-mac-adamed for the first time, providing easier access for the teacher to visit Tom ODonoghue, Tom Beag (Burns) and Tomáseen Irwin, where he conversed in Gaelic with the remaining fragments of the former Gaeltacht district, which had been supported economically through the local fishing community of Gleninagh.

While the early 1960's are usually characterized by the arrival of television to Ireland, as well as the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, an individual within North Clare continued to share his talents with the local community. During hymn singing sessions at the local church, Mattie's confident voice was clearly heard above others; so that local-calm was experienced during a time of international crisis. Mattie was missed by many individuals in the North Clare area, when he departed for Dublin in 1966 to take up his new position of School's Inspector.

Gaelic Matters Continued:

He continued his interest in Gaelic matters and was particularly proud, when his son-in-law, Brian Lohan received a Celtic Cross at Croke Park in Sepember 1995 and a second one in September 1997.

Mattie visited County Clare in December 2012 to attend the launch of his publication on The Hurlers of Kilfenora and Kilmacduagh at the Auburn Lodge, Ennis in the company of his friend, Brother Seán MacConmara and was overjoyed to see Clare receive the MacCarthy Cup in September 2013.

Book Launch of Historical Publication "Well on The Road To The Pinnacle"

Well known TV Presenter and Clareman, Marty Morrissey will be the special guest as Ballyvaughan/Fanore GAA Club unveil their long awaited historical publication of the club over the last 100 years.

The idea for such a publication came as a tribute and recognition of the momentous year that was 2007 for our club and parish. The committee felt that this historic year should not pass without remembering and recognizing those who represented the club as players, officials and supporters so loyally down through the years. This publication is an attempt to capture some of the highlights of the past and while by no means a definitive history of the club we hope it will rekindle some of the highs and lows that the club has experienced in that time. This book would not have been possible without the in-depth research carried out and many late hours spent compiling and editing the vast compendium of treasured historical articles and photographs that were resurrected and I would like to thank all who contributed articles, photographs and suggestions and helped in any way towards its completion.

This publication is a culmination of many months of hard work by an extremely dedicated committee giving freely of their time and expertise. Veronica Costello, as editor, worked closely with the other members of the committee, Patsy Carrucan, Pat Costello, Karen Culligan, Kieran Linnane and Sean Martyn. Mort OLoughlin provided a huge amount of photographs from the earlier decades and was a mine of information, as he writes the Ballyvaughan parish notes for as far back as I can remember. Peter Doolin also gave his treasured books and paper clippings which helped tremendously to put our publication together.

This has been a momentous year in the history of Ballyvaughan/Fanore GAA Club. History was made when our Intermediate Team took the Talty Cup back to the parish for the first time in 70 years. Success was achieved after nine months of total dedication and commitment from a panel of players who set out to achieve their goal of obtaining senior status in 2007. Their commitment to training, with early mornings, late evenings and weekends is testament to their determination to bring back an Intermediate Title to the parish of Ballyvaughan and Fanore.

An equally momentous success was achieved when our U12 footballers brought back the first underage title to the club in a number of years. This achievement in itself augurs well for the future of underage football in the years ahead.

The tone and momentum for the year was set early when Bríd Queally and her pupils brought back an All-Ireland title to the parish with their beautiful design of an All-Ireland Jersey. The launch of the jersey, with Peter Canavan (Peter the Great), in Fanore, was one of the highlights of the year. Their presence in Croke Park brought a new dimension to All-Ireland Football Final Day.

Our underage boys and girls also participated with Burren Gaels and St. Breckans hurlers and had great success with these clubs. It is further evidence of the overall talent that exists within the parish.

Our publication covers all the above successes and much much more, with many exciting photographs and stories.

2008 brings with it new challenges, new goals and new mountains to climb. With the experience of 2007 behind us and with the effort and support of all concerned Ballyvaughan/Fanore GAA Club can reach greater heights.

We look forward to seeing you all on Sunday 4th May 2008 at 9pm in Logues Lodge, Ballyvaughan. A great night ensured!

BALLYVAUGHAN/FANORE INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONS FOR 2007

The 30th September 2007 will go down in the history of our parish of one of our greatest days when we brought back the Talty Cup to Ballyvaughan/Fanore in winning the Intermediate Football Title. In winning the title we beat our nearest and dearest rivals Ml Cusacks on a score line of  10 points to 8 points. In a very tense affair Ballyvaughan/Fanore got the upper hand half way through the first half and scored 4 points in a row to lead 6 points to 4points at half time.  Ml Cusacks had settled better in the opening minutes but wasted too many scoring chances.  Ballyvaughan/Fanore scored first in the second half  but Ml Cusacks levelled at 7pts each after 15 minutes.  Wasted chances again cost them and they didnt score again until the 62nd minute of the game, while in the meantime Ballyvaughan/Fanore had added 2 great points to win by 10points to 8points.  John Martyn scored 7points, 6 from frees, Jack Queally, Kevin Carrucan and Sean McNamara scored one each from play. Ml Cusacks amassed a total of 15 wides to Ballyvaughan/Fanores 6. They also couldnt compete with Ballyvaughan/Fanores commitment, hard work and fierce desire to win on the day. The support on the day was absolutely enormous, outnumbering Ml Cusacks 6 to 1. Oliver and Mary McNamara sponsored a man of the match trophy and in a fitting gesture was presented to James and Stevie Hynes for their outstanding performance after a tragic family bereavement.  The colour and flair which we brought with us will never be forgotten. The road to Cusack Park was littered with black and orange posters and flags for support. The winning parade back home started at the gates of Cusack Park throught Ennis, Corofin, Kilnaboy, Kilfenora, Lisdoonvarna, Fanore and ending with a tour of  Ballyvaughan. Along the way we were greeted with massive support and bonfires from our neighbouring clubs, friends and families, especially a champagne reception at Joseph Caseys in Fanore to add to the champagne already at the final whistle.  It was a touching effect as Kieran Casey was away on honeymoon.  A massive celebration ensued in Logues Bar with a  first class meal and drinks sponsored by Paul and Mary Connole.  It was a great night for young and old and the club appreciated all the support on the night and at the match.  Great credit has to go to the management team led by Pat Costello with Sean Gurthrie, Patsy Carrucan, Tom Newell, Veronica Costello,  Patricia Casey and Kees Sear, physio. A special word of thanks to the players who put in a massive years work for the club, we couldnt have done it without them. Now bring on senior as we must again raise the bar and do our utmost to reach it. Again many thanks to everyone involved.

Ballyvaughan/Fanore Gaa Club held its Division 3 League Winners Medal Presentation on Sunday night 3rd June2007 in Monks Bar Ballyvaughan.

A large crowd enjoyed a great night of craic and comradreship at this local event.  The medals were presented by Seamus Clancy, Corofin, Clares first and only football Allstar, and Johnny Keane, Co Board Assistant Secretary officiated also.  We would like to sincerely thank them both and everyone who turned up to support this event.
