DIVISION 5 FOOTBALL LEAGUE RE-FIXTURE 29-04-2017

BALLYVAUGHAN-FANORE      4:12     MOY    1:07

A personal haul of 4:01 from play from the right boot of James Howard led the way to victory in this re-fixed division 5 football league game at the community field versus Moy (29-04-2017), the game was postponed a week earlier due to the death of Moy native James Haren. A minute silence was observed by all present at the start of the game in memory of his passing.

The days of old were revisited but this time it was a maiden voyage for this Moy team to Ballyvaughan-Fanore’s territory in the Community Field. Gone were the days but certainly not forgotten of the great battles throughout the 1980’s in Lahinch in the Junior Championship and the North Clare Divisional Board fixtures in the Kenny, Cooney and Lynch cup games, a new generation of player’s new rivalry may be, only time will tell.

A decision to play against the wind might have been a strange one but certainly paid off as the first half yielded four goals all scored by James Howard from play against the elements and yet still managed to command a 4-04 to 1-05 interval lead. In the opening burst of play questions were asked of the Ballyvaughan-Fanore’s defence as a goal was conceded early on from a speculative shot that sailed all the way to the top corner of the net from the 13m line out on the side line to put Ballyvaughan-Fanore on the back foot, but It was soon game over as James Howard found the net with his first goal not long after Moy scoring their goal but to his delight little did he know midway through the second half he was going to score 3 more goals in a matter of minutes and even seconds between two of them. By the 25th minute Ballyvaughan-Fanore were practically out of sight.

Both teams seemed to play better football against the wind than with it, If Moy have a need to reflect on why they lost the game, they would underline the fact that the concession of too many goals was the core problem. For Ballyvaughan-Fanore, James Howard stood head and shoulders over one and sundry. Kieran Casey defended well while Jonah Culligan and Jamie Hynes enjoyed long spells of domination at midfield, for Moy Tommy Garrihy and Padraic Killeen were the pick of the forwards. Willy Curtin and Brendan Hayes tried hardest also in the defence.
